Richard entered Personnel and Training Management in 1975 following a period of Graduate professional training during which he gained responsibility for his own contracts, associated staff, sub-contractors and budgets. He took on the role of establishing a new function, introducing policies and procedures for a workforce of 2000 people; providing support to management for recruitment terms and conditions discipline application of procedures monitoring of same. The organisation had a large direct operative workforce and the role required developing effective working relationships with several Trades Unions particularly within the Mining division. Input to this aspect of the responsibility became very challenging in the late 1980s. The scope of the role also included handling safety issues and initiating training programmes for operatives, technicians and managers. In 1988 he established a new training and development department for the recently enlarged organisation combining two major divisions of AMEC. Richard is actively involved with the Institution of Civil Engineers and other professional bodies within the construction industry, employer associations, higher education institutions and construction industry training bodies. This involves establishing policies for the furtherance of national and international standards in management, professional and technical skills and competencies. Richard has carried out development work on the creation of technical and management Standards and supporting units of assessment for a major learning project commissioned by Transport for London (TfL) in conjunction with QCA. He is involved in the management of an Awarding Body (NFTS) and offers support and advice to a number of Training Providers – principally on aspects of course design and delivery for Technical and Management training. |
